About the Study

In April 2008, the City of Tucson Mayor and Council and the Pima County Board of Supervisors initiated a multi-year study of water and wastewater infrastructure, supply and planning issues. The ultimate goal of this effort is to assure a sustainable community water source given continuing pressures on water supply caused by population growth.

The first two phases of the study focused on collecting basic facts related to the condition and capacity of water, wastewater and reclaimed water infrastructure, and of available water supplies. Information on critical factors related to planning for a sustainable water future also was collected. Phase II of the study culminated in a final report from the Oversight Committee and staff that sets forth a new paradigm for planning for a sustainable water future and a set of common city/county goals and recommendations.

A 12 member Oversight Committee appointed by the Tucson Mayor and Council and Pima County Board of Supervisors oversaw Phases I and II. The Committee held 36 open public meetings and the entire process was transparent and inclusive. Following the completion of the Phase II Final Report in January 2010, the Oversight Committee chose to disband in recognition of having fulfilled their mission as described in the Study Scope of Work.
